A modern gaming setup featuring two black microphones on a desk, a colorful computer monitor displaying a city skyline, a webcam on top, a ring light, and cat-ear headphones, all set against a vibrant purple background.

As the highest-priced device in the Seiren V2 series, the Seiren V2 Pro has the most built-in controls - three in total. The functionality of the microphone mute button is self-explanatory: once pressed, the microphone is muted and ignores all sounds - press it a second time and the device resumes audio operation. Nice: A red or green light, in the form of a microphone symbol, indicates whether the recording function is switched on or off. Below this is the volume control for the headphones. Finally, the microphone amplifier control (gain) can be used to regulate how sensitively the microphone records; it is advisable to adjust the gain here to keep unwanted background noise out of the audio recording or to avoid audio clipping and peaking. The 5 mm headphone connection, mounted on your stomach, ensures that you can hear what you say into the microphone. Setup & basics As mentioned, the Seiren V2 Pro is advertised as a professional USB microphone for streamers. According to the produc...

During FMX 2022, Manne Öhrström, Global Head of Film Software at Framestore, delivered a talk about the Present project, where machine learning translates high-end film character rigs into real-time. At FMX, Present’s collaboration partners Cubic Motion (acquired by Epic Games in 2020) and the Universityof Augsburg demonstrated how emotional engagement with a user can be facilitated on a next level. A key-question was: “How can interactions with virtual avatars become commonplace – while circumventing the dreaded uncanny valley?”

Bertha-Benz Hall at the House of Economy in Stuttgart at FMX 2022 Manne and his colleagues took center stage at an insightful presentation about their project “Photoreal Realtime Sentient Entity”. Alongside Manne, Steve Caulkin, Engineering Director at Epic Games Animation UK, and Florian Lingenfelser, Chair for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence at Augsburg University, took the stage during the presentation. In our conversation, Manne hinted at what Present is quintessentially about: “Present is about people; it’s about a growing, elderly population, people stuck inside because of a pandemic – but it’s also about digital environments. In a way, digi...

VFX house Rising Sun Pictures doesn't shy away from it - exaggerated comic book violence. Lively visual effects for the third season of the successful (anti)superhero series!

In nuce: VFX service provider Rising Sun Pictures (rspvfx for short) has released an almost three-and-a-half-minute VFX breakdown for the third season of the superhero streaming series The Boys. Based on the comic books of the same name by creative minds Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the series tells the story of the CIA commando “The Boys”, which confronts marauding (anti)superheroes in what will soon be four seasons. Just like the series, the VFX breakdown is not stingy with its explicit – yet humorously exaggerated – depiction of violence. Click further: In the past, readers of Digital Production have repeatedly marvelled at the eye-catching visual effects that are let off the proverbial leash by VFX service provider rspvfx. See below:
  • 8.03.2022: If Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski only knew it: Rising Sun Picturesis filming the Amazon with wet VFXs (for the Disney film Jungle Cruise).

This article by Sabine Hatzfeld originally appeared in DP 03 : 2015. For the film project "Le Gouffre", Thomas Chrétien, Carl Beauchemin and David Forest quit their jobs, formed the Lightning Boy Studio and moved in together for cost and production reasons. A Kickstarter campaign brought the animated film with the unusual look to completion, which was nominated for an animago AWARD in the "Best Short Film" category in 2O14. The trio met in 2006 at the Canadian college "Cégep du Vieux Montréal"(www.cvm.qc.ca). Carl Beauchemin and David Forest studied 3D animation, Thomas Chrétien 2D animation. In the third and final year of their studies, they decided to work together as filmmakers in the future. Thomas went on to complete a two-year 3D degree programme, while Carl and David gained their first experience in the industry. After six months of developing the story, production finally got underway at the beginning of 2012 - despite all team members now working full-time. Carl and David work...

In nuce: VFX service provider Scanline has released a three-and-a-half-minute VFX breakdown for the fantasy film Slumberland (German title: Schlummerland).

In toto: The film Slumberland is available via the streaming service Netflix. The film was directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously made the Tribute to Panem films Catching Fire, Mockingjay Part and Part 2 – as well as the sci-fi film I Am Legend (starring Will Smith), the mystery thriller Constantine (with Keanu Reeves) and the drama Water for Elephants (with Christoph Waltz as the film villain). For Slumberland, the filmmakers used the comic series Little Nemo (German title: Kleiner Niemand) by comic artist Winsor McCay as a model. The film is about a girl called Nemo who attends a regular school for the first time in her life after the death of her father – and soon discovers a secret map to the dream world of Slumberland. Nemo, accompanied by the crazy Flip (played by Jason Momoa), sets off to see her deceased father again in the dream world.

Click to continue: Below is a selection of other VFX breakdowns from Scanline VFX, demonstrating what else is in the pipeline for the girls and boys of the VFX house.

  • 17.01.2022: “It’s burning!”: Scanline VFX heats up the Chinese action film The Rescue. Better than Michael Bay?
  • 10.05.2022: This Netflix series is a real (bluescreen) cowhide: Sniffing the Tyrolean mountain air – with Kitz.
  • 1.09.2022: The Avenger with the cape: Scanline VFX has reached into its bag of tricks for the remake of the self-made superhero – and Batman into his Bat-tool belt.

  • 25.06.2020: Current VFX showcase from Scanline: In the showcase by visual effects company Scanline, Spiderman, Aquaman and mechanical men join forces.
